The description at Dictionary.com is a perfect definition my studio-mosaic: composed of a combination of diverse elements.

I do call it "play." It's definitely a way to do some artistic things when I don't have paper/pens/pencil at hand. I can also be intentional about it, leaving my other creative tools in my studio.<div><br /></div><div>There is so much to learn and so many generous people with free tutorials, free brushes, stamps, and swatches!! Of course, my wallet has also come out to purchase those things as well. <div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfWx0RLK6U5p7Mu005TNN02KVbCGxY4iU1jGbaD9VYrgOkVn8DVIHkZ7xtKzLxxM0ZMhmI370kckbUvErj5w5cyGsPzWph8CONUOpIrNFDg-bRNXk05vpaBA8VAEBuPGhXzCNUMbzAGJneOWOFi0pjnn4rm1w9oufrQpoVJpe1MyRJst1qOkqxeVk/s3000/77687CB3-AA87-477B-9A78-22566AE949B7.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3000" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfWx0RLK6U5p7Mu005TNN02KVbCGxY4iU1jGbaD9VYrgOkVn8DVIHkZ7xtKzLxxM0ZMhmI370kckbUvErj5w5cyGsPzWph8CONUOpIrNFDg-bRNXk05vpaBA8VAEBuPGhXzCNUMbzAGJneOWOFi0pjnn4rm1w9oufrQpoVJpe1MyRJst1qOkqxeVk/w200-h200/77687CB3-AA87-477B-9A78-22566AE949B7.jpeg" title="Procreate® art by Candice Schwark" width="200" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bokeh Lights Brush</td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p>It still amazes me that this app's purchase price is $9.99. It's full of features I like, although I realize more professional artists would like more advanced features. Hopefully, none of the large companies will buy out this gem of an app, because I would fear price increases and complicated additions. </p><p>In the meantime I am fairly certain there are many thousands of people using this product, and it's very convenient, helpful handbook. The link to it is right in the app! I suppose you can tell I'm a huge fan, so I'll be posting more finished projects occasionally.</p><p> Here are a few things I've worked on lately. Nothing really fancy but these are created using Mixed Media, Ephemera and Gold Rush Glitter Fill brushes/stamps from #AlainaJensen, and Procreate's® Bokeh Lights brush. One thing I've noticed - the amount of digital brushes I have is beginning to look like the amount of supplies I have in my studio!! ha! </p><p>Time to go back to playing.........Happy creating!</p><p>Blessings!</p><p>Candice</p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG9N5xzEmbQnhvcQSgwArzJo5ZsV8bQRTh0-VhrYkpYOZzK7UIqOy0A8-IqIl5h4N7DuBqsm4D9pwyFYU_rFbYSwc2G8wN8nuVVwViZJjaRBYJYTj3UtevOTAFaRt81u3PY9RUue8fhkRjNrv_AM5KoeQijQ0B77Z_nl4CsrQ0LRlhWjEZJZhtA3M/s4800/68F90EF4-538A-4E91-BA84-7C31ABE5A94C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4800" data-original-width="3000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG9N5xzEmbQnhvcQSgwArzJo5ZsV8bQRTh0-VhrYkpYOZzK7UIqOy0A8-IqIl5h4N7DuBqsm4D9pwyFYU_rFbYSwc2G8wN8nuVVwViZJjaRBYJYTj3UtevOTAFaRt81u3PY9RUue8fhkRjNrv_AM5KoeQijQ0B77Z_nl4CsrQ0LRlhWjEZJZhtA3M/w250-h400/68F90EF4-538A-4E91-BA84-7C31ABE5A94C.jpeg" title="Procreate® art by Candice Schwark" width="250" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br /><p><br /></p></div></div>Candice Schwarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00357811418444073150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2870938418364072548.post-64671594017872372242022-09-12T23:20:00.001-04:002022-09-12T23:20:45.132-04:00Eco Printing 101 at OPC, Rochester, MI<p> A rainy, early morning turned into an afternoon of sunshine as students began unfolding or unwrapping their eco-prints. Working in the beautiful stone cottage in front of the Rochester, MI Older Persons Commission (OPC) gardens, the students were busy, busy, busy. They printed on watercolor paper, printmaking paper, and cotton fabric. They learned about mordants and what plant materials worked, or didn't work. One of the students brought one of the "stars" of eco-printing - eucalyptus leaves -- purchased at Trader Joes. The leaves were "stars" again. All of the other flowers were graciously provided by <a href="https://www.uticaflorist.com/" target="_blank">Utica Florist, Utica, MI</a>.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEizf4PJz_EdPoNNSO24XOYTDel1EhDboxzYYfa06Jjwyd0PiowmKaFnZWCcuueQ7kegu2UGdr9TSZ69g6guTOHYtl_wTn_rTt0QV8rCOUFxBNYW_gCX1UxVowCAi-8Zn8ZcDMkaMPtw5fnGVsCc_d7a8wYA_l8W_ojHhi1a1o4fNAnjJ2i0V3yoMUQ" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="887" data-original-width="886" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEizf4PJz_EdPoNNSO24XOYTDel1EhDboxzYYfa06Jjwyd0PiowmKaFnZWCcuueQ7kegu2UGdr9TSZ69g6guTOHYtl_wTn_rTt0QV8rCOUFxBNYW_gCX1UxVowCAi-8Zn8ZcDMkaMPtw5fnGVsCc_d7a8wYA_l8W_ojHhi1a1o4fNAnjJ2i0V3yoMUQ" width="240" /></a></div>Using various methods, each person printed using leaves, flowers, red or white onion skins, cabbage, iron, alum, vinegar. It's always fun to see the students unveil their creations......not wanting to wait 'til they cool a bit from the steam or 400 degree water containers.<p></p><p>Some took flowers and pounded them into water color paper. Usually people do this with one flower or petal or leaf, but one of the students took a whole bouquet she made up and pounded the whole thing. It created a beautiful pattern. She can go back into it with colored pencils, ink, etc. to sketch some flower shapes over the background pattern. </p><p>If they weren't flower-pounding while waiting for their creations to be ready, they cut up some eco-prints sheets I provided to create backgrounds for cards. They stamped trees or a greeting on the prints before adhering them<br /> to the card fronts.</p><p>They learned a lot even though it was a basic eco printing class.</p><p>The time flew by!</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxA8vxVQjD_UavCSZXITMBkBcRtLn9qKr5PvyuhHaH0KBeyvwETsqes1tFWpAcvncdhhvJY0wIfSnT1YBqRfg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><p>Blessings,</p><p>Candice</p>Candice Schwarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00357811418444073150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2870938418364072548.post-58491241304245580482022-05-27T17:16:00.002-04:002022-05-27T17:16:44.319-04:00Ladybug Crossing<p> I got this idea from Pinterest - cute little scene in our yard. :)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4hH2Q8b4dyXxaP9G4oWjWE1jJWv4YC3oglgYIpLgBlWZasjomED_FNc8wlicNOXeCiioRDQ8OPVQo3e6Dzj3kkc6p9hiWCmmWyfZz_tDJywaOg47kVCW9_zVlC8FUU9UR2QTpMB0t-1ANIvVeMsBxvt1VXhRKuPX2SsgnmYm-dTdFwDxMntkSppM/s3024/0EE87DAE-49F0-4D00-8499-05702DFCCBFA.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4hH2Q8b4dyXxaP9G4oWjWE1jJWv4YC3oglgYIpLgBlWZasjomED_FNc8wlicNOXeCiioRDQ8OPVQo3e6Dzj3kkc6p9hiWCmmWyfZz_tDJywaOg47kVCW9_zVlC8FUU9UR2QTpMB0t-1ANIvVeMsBxvt1VXhRKuPX2SsgnmYm-dTdFwDxMntkSppM/s320/0EE87DAE-49F0-4D00-8499-05702DFCCBFA.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>Ladybug created by painting glass pebbles.</p><p>FUN little project.</p>Candice Schwarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00357811418444073150noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2870938418364072548.post-81080791662619455952022-05-18T19:30:00.000-04:002022-05-18T19:30:32.717-04:00Eco-Printing, MI at the OPC, Rochester Hills<p>All set to introduce OPC (Older Person's Commission) participants to Eco-Printing and flower pounding in the beautiful stone cottage by the garden. I present this class approximately twice a year there, and enjoy sharing these projects. The "unveiling" of each watercolor paper after it's been steamed with botanicals is a joy! Watch for the "after" slideshow in the next few days.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyjRgfIS-egFHPvkWGGGxaqLe0uKQ1Y6NaZhUwdsMYM9kLEpj05P4ruWeX5SNEyGk7J80CWf_ropd9vf5085g' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p>Candice Schwarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00357811418444073150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2870938418364072548.post-6970572844948304322022-04-12T15:43:00.000-04:002022-04-12T15:43:32.465-04:00Procreate® Play<p> Are you familiar with the app Pocreate®? The company promotes it as "The complete art studio you can take anywhere" and I do not disagree. Wow! It is pretty amazing and user friendly. </p><p>I 've enjoyed "playing" with Procreate® for a couple of years --- still have so much to learn. One of the ideas that I like so well is that if I have my iPad with me (or even my iPhone), I can be doing some sort of artistic expression anywhere! Of course, I know a paper and pencil will work just fine, but this is more fulfilling and versatile on a long car trip, or in a waiting room. This app even has the link to the manual built into it!</p><p>The options are many - coloring in pre-scanned artwork made by me or others. Practicing layers, masks, clipping masks - (those things that can get so confusing). become easier with the practice. You can even learn about creating animations. One area that has been fun (besides watching numerous tutorials) is creating "mixed-media" backgrounds. I do this regularly with paper, paint, ink, pencils, etc., but doing all of it digitally really allows so many more layers to be added, altered, hidden, so that I end up with more than one possible layout. </p><p>Brushes, stamps, color palettes, overlays, backgrounds - innumerable options that are free with the app. There are thousands (probably) more to add from wonderful digital artists - free and purchased.</p><p>My background pages are ready for additional work, either by printing for other uses (collage), or for adding digital text or artwork.....journaling, framing, cardmaking, etc. </p><p>So, I imagine you can tell how enamored I am with this app - unbelievable price for the power it provides.</p><p>I have no affiliation with Procreate®, $9.99, except as a satisfied customer. Procreat® Pocket $4.99 is for use with an iPhone. I DO recommend them!</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMQilPMn1n_h5gXopRk0BVNv54otLWc2bdCAMR9Sxu5pSL0QBOJWaYdEcNuqlPSfHnd3U-lNxpqVbTbqaHr1bnrb3ozYmkhjdi56z0ifh2CWZqevmObMPdOydJVODM3PAK4kzuob4zHh4cX84mVwHbmFQIALnzvSVvhxnEcLThPj2cM6GEH8RJ6ZY/s2976/Northern_Lights_Reflections2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2286" data-original-width="2976" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMQilPMn1n_h5gXopRk0BVNv54otLWc2bdCAMR9Sxu5pSL0QBOJWaYdEcNuqlPSfHnd3U-lNxpqVbTbqaHr1bnrb3ozYmkhjdi56z0ifh2CWZqevmObMPdOydJVODM3PAK4kzuob4zHh4cX84mVwHbmFQIALnzvSVvhxnEcLThPj2cM6GEH8RJ6ZY/s320/Northern_Lights_Reflections2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Digital Mixed Media Background made in Pocreate®</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiehFbbLPo6MxMdOpgnZoRKKCNzs_GBitnTC20APJXeWIScaQZu6sJN7oLx2A5sKHZNYXe7WUOi0VX68rYRHQrU3AN5itv6aRcdkx0SNKC8WMPH4VgygLbSiOz0Hu_nHBeOsC8QPQxQBUBbHagMATDKxuPJDL3FoQ54svM0Me0dS5IgMihwobhIdx0/s2224/24F1E57E-8CCA-4F74-9C39-43AA2D2CC99F.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2224" data-original-width="1668" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiehFbbLPo6MxMdOpgnZoRKKCNzs_GBitnTC20APJXeWIScaQZu6sJN7oLx2A5sKHZNYXe7WUOi0VX68rYRHQrU3AN5itv6aRcdkx0SNKC8WMPH4VgygLbSiOz0Hu_nHBeOsC8QPQxQBUBbHagMATDKxuPJDL3FoQ54svM0Me0dS5IgMihwobhIdx0/s320/24F1E57E-8CCA-4F74-9C39-43AA2D2CC99F.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Digital Mixed Media Background made in Pocreate®</div><div><br /></div></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9twTRv_2JfX71A2bbl-AO_eWY_VNLRwdt8lIPSBUrSd0mKMa08zjw8EK3tW8FzHoKGuqH9vzK4te40TMxg05uHksjkWto3liEHuh6vB745yXrPOBU7l1OQGMAO_dQgvdcOiaxAq93Ljj7M_pxUFgLPs-41r42c24KIgkS7Ff4xY64INYIfQB_OiI/s3300/9A5B3810-3772-4B00-9BC5-E2402DA21C4F.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2550" data-original-width="3300" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9twTRv_2JfX71A2bbl-AO_eWY_VNLRwdt8lIPSBUrSd0mKMa08zjw8EK3tW8FzHoKGuqH9vzK4te40TMxg05uHksjkWto3liEHuh6vB745yXrPOBU7l1OQGMAO_dQgvdcOiaxAq93Ljj7M_pxUFgLPs-41r42c24KIgkS7Ff4xY64INYIfQB_OiI/s320/9A5B3810-3772-4B00-9BC5-E2402DA21C4F.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image scanned, imported into Procreate® where it was colored -<br /> text added with Apple Pencil</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFw4QQmTof5Yr7kc5HjgVuqBI8VvggTMmt6jF8eQ4b0AdwAcr2N6M7jDxYBsbjd4ahH72t7qQZF65bqCKPrZKNO8H2v7HqmZ5ZJ7qnBXRPBL71smVY9GX19ZcwbDvUyYlx398ex2yCFS5atsRZtWZHbE8tczVjdIDwTSIuZMuyBOGbFPKAr2rknO0/s1500/893BB5C9-9FFF-4C6A-9AE1-D777E6D7841A.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFw4QQmTof5Yr7kc5HjgVuqBI8VvggTMmt6jF8eQ4b0AdwAcr2N6M7jDxYBsbjd4ahH72t7qQZF65bqCKPrZKNO8H2v7HqmZ5ZJ7qnBXRPBL71smVY9GX19ZcwbDvUyYlx398ex2yCFS5atsRZtWZHbE8tczVjdIDwTSIuZMuyBOGbFPKAr2rknO0/s320/893BB5C9-9FFF-4C6A-9AE1-D777E6D7841A.jpeg" width="192" /><br /></a>Image drawn and colored in Procreate®</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">If you are working with this app, let me know what you are doing with it. It was a relaxing weekend that included wonderful people who enjoyed times of worship with new friends, art-filled workshops, good food and coffee and conversation! It was just what I needed in a "getaway." Faith and art and new friends in an awesome location. The Gillooly family and the Eagle Rock camp were so warm and welcoming AND organized! :)<p></p><p></p><p>Looks like there will be another retreat in the Spring....check out the details for yourself. This is in the area called Top of the World, Tennessee in the Great Smokey Mountains.<br /></p><p><a href="https://eaglerockcamp.brushfire.com/EagleRockCreativesRetreat/" target="_blank">Eagle Rock Creatives</a></p><p>Blessings, Candice</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DAK7Eju3jdU/YYWdvxAdRtI/AAAAAAAACdM/qyggJPb1xVsXCIdcTKzAGF8N7JU2MCO3wCPcBGAYYCw/s1024/8DA85715-7277-4B1C-9168-02A21382EC9C_1_105_c.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DAK7Eju3jdU/YYWdvxAdRtI/AAAAAAAACdM/qyggJPb1xVsXCIdcTKzAGF8N7JU2MCO3wCPcBGAYYCw/s320/8DA85715-7277-4B1C-9168-02A21382EC9C_1_105_c.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qGq5QwqOq8M/YYWhyoKCLhI/AAAAAAAACdc/6hJy-6qazxkSSkrcL7bakuDMh0go0yeBgCLcBGAsYHQ/s3339/79F72861-3735-40C7-8387-2065499D9806_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2309" data-original-width="3339" height="276" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qGq5QwqOq8M/YYWhyoKCLhI/AAAAAAAACdc/6hJy-6qazxkSSkrcL7bakuDMh0go0yeBgCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h276/79F72861-3735-40C7-8387-2065499D9806_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br />Candice Schwarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00357811418444073150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2870938418364072548.post-68445056278703927852021-08-05T02:00:00.000-04:002021-08-05T02:00:26.052-04:00Procreate and Me<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xUW7Fog-AEo/YQt8tVo9IHI/AAAAAAAACbs/RfqdloQUT6EK9l5TWw3VX650z3fT9rDgQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1080/AFB726DC-2989-45EF-9826-4121B1ACEA80.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xUW7Fog-AEo/YQt8tVo9IHI/AAAAAAAACbs/RfqdloQUT6EK9l5TWw3VX650z3fT9rDgQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/AFB726DC-2989-45EF-9826-4121B1ACEA80.png" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>I really don't need a "new" thing but I've been experimenting with the Procreate app for about a year. <a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W-F-rn0lCLE/XvgOTG0PTkI/AAAAAAAACR0/ERqO-iMWJ0EWdC0S9fVfoofFc9XPVr6UwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/42E53BC0-AE92-4AC4-9CA6-9AAA114F3CFA_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="©Candice Schwark 2020" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W-F-rn0lCLE/XvgOTG0PTkI/AAAAAAAACR0/ERqO-iMWJ0EWdC0S9fVfoofFc9XPVr6UwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/42E53BC0-AE92-4AC4-9CA6-9AAA114F3CFA_1_201_a.jpeg" title="©Candice Schwark2020" width="240" /></a></div>
Books are one of my weaknesses. I am trying to lighten my shelves by donating some of them, like my calligraphy books. There's quite a collection living with me.<br />
<br />
Of course, I can weed out books but then I turn right around and make them!! It's another one of my "gotta-do-it-whenever-I-can" hobbies. I joined the Handmade Book Club online and Ali Manning presents us with challenges, which motivate me. It's amazing how many I've produced lately. If I can part with them, they'll be great gifts.<br />
<br />
The Zebra batik fabric book is a recent addition. I've had the batik fabric for many, many years and it finally has a purpose. I don't even remember where I bought it. This is a slim case binding.<br />
<br />
The one below is a coptic binding using handmade paper for the cover and collaged papers for the signatures. This was a fun activity for a one-day online retreat. My pages need embellishing. Often when I make books, I like to use a pendant that I've enhanced with resin and baubles. I add a bungie cord so it wraps around the book as shown here on the coptic binding before I stitched it.<br />
<br />
One of my favorite things to do is use my eco-printed papers in my books....they add such a nice feature for writing on, or as an embellishment.<br />
<br />
I believe Ali Manning's Handmade Book Club is not open for membership right now, but I highly recommend it. You may add your name to the waitlist. Be sure to check out her main website: <a href="https://vintagepagedesigns.com/" target="_blank">Vintage Page Designs</a>.<br />
<br />
Now, I guess I should go figure out what I want to put into these books.<br />
<br />
Blessings on your day!<br />
Candice<br />

Six women joined me for an Introduction to Eco-Printing in the beautiful little cottage next to the OPC Senior Center garden in Rochester. A good definition of this process is on a guest blog post at the link below:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://12monthsinview.blogspot.com/2013/06/eco-printing-on-fabric.html" target="_blank"><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start;">Eco printing, also known as eco bundling, is the discovery of </span><span style="color: #888888; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start;">India Flint</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start;">, an Australian textile artist who works with natural dyes. In her popular book, </span><i style="background-color: white; color: #888888; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start; text-decoration-line: none;">Eco Colour</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start; text-decoration-line: none;">, she explains the process of eco printing. The name I like to give this technique is “nature printing with steam”. </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start; text-decoration-line: none;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start; text-decoration-line: none;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: start; text-decoration-line: none;">It just seems to more easily explain the process.</span></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was an ideal location and a beautiful day for setting up the steamers/roaster outside while we worked inside. We did have one snafu when the circuits went out, but as soon as they were fixed we were off and running with packets of papers, flowers, stems and leaves in the pots.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We gathered some materials from the nearby garden but mostly used the colorful box of materials donated by <a href="https://www.uticaflorist.com/" target="_blank">Utica Florist</a>. What a treat to have those beautiful colors sitting in the middle of the table. 'Each sheet of paper was quickly doused in a vinegar/water solution.....many of the plants had had a bath in alum (pickling spice) and water the night before.....then plants or plant parts were arranged on the paper so that each side of the paper would be touch the plants. We folded our papers in half before laying the plants out. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we got everything arranged, I wrapped them in a cloth that had had a bath in rusty water (iron sulfate). A ceramic tile was placed on either side of the stack of papers/plants, then bound with a large rubber band. They were then placed in the steamer. We also wrapped a few 1/2" copper pipes with flowers and a heavier water color paper and placed them in the steamer. The heavier paper needed more steaming time than we had, but we did get some good results. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While we waited for the 2-hour steaming time to end, we made small booklets with accordian-folded centers for storing our papers when they dried. We made covers from old text paper, and eco printings that I had done previously. Some of the students included small sticks as a frame around the cover collage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Someone mentioned that this would be a good two-day project - one day of printing, overnight drying then processing the next day. This would be a good event for next Fall.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I enjoyed the day and even as a teacher, you learn a lot each time you eco print!!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Blessings......</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Our Visual Faith - Metro Detroit group joined me as we began our 2019-2020 year of study September 21st. Those who were able to attend this time included: (front row)Marie (and dog Angel), Lynn, Charlene, (back row) Heidi, Maureen, Marjorie. We usually meet at St. John Lutheran Church and School in Rochester, MI but our group is from many churches and areas of Metro Detroit.<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some of us will continue working in our Altered Book, and some will begin a new book. We are using old books to learn and test various techniques that we might bring to our Bible as we spend more time with our Lord. Anyone is welcome to join us at any time. I just need RSVPs so I'm sure to have enough materials for everyone. Our normal Bible Journaling "kit" might include pencil, good eraser, small ruler, fine tip permanent pen, wipes, notebookm glue stick and Bible.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have a theme this year based on the 23rd Psalm.....looking at Our Shepherd and his relationship to us. We are also referring to the book by Phillip Keller "A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm." Keller's insights as a former real-life shepherd into the study of this Psalm create visual references for us as we understand our Shepherd's care for us. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This book was recommended to me by Julie, a participant in our group. In looking for the book, I discovered that there is a Shepherd Trilogy in one book by this author. I also recommend it!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In October we will look at the verses: "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul." I like to include a hymn or poem in our devotion time.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the church of my youth, the weekly church bulletin had a phrase written at the top that I've never forgotten. I don't remember ever asking who wrote it, but I recite it to myself often when I'm seeking stillness. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, as is my style, I went online last week searching. I found out that it was written in 1935 by Helen Taylor and Wilfred Sanderson as part of a song. A 78rpm record (scratches included) has been reproduced online and this song called <a href="https://archive.org/details/78_green-pastures_john-mccormack-helen-taylor-wilfred-sanderson-edwin-schneider_gbia0057989a" target="_blank">Green Pastures</a> is sung by (Irish?)tenor John McCormack. You should be able to hear it at the link. The images with the song at this <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkR85fc6Yaw" target="_blank">link</a> are beautiful.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The phrase from it that I love is: </div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"This quiet and calm my spirit restore until I go forth on my journey once more."</h3>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Click<a href="https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-174866831/view?partId=nla.obj-174866844" target="_blank"> here for the songsheet.</a></div>

<br />
The small class size enabled all of us to do a little more "playing" than the class description.<br />
<br />
They jumped right in and experimented, picking 2 colors and adding white and black. Sounds like they might continue acrylic pours at home!<br />
<br />
They all signed up for my EcoPrinting class in the OPC cottage September 30th. We'll be using clippings from the garden outside the cottage and in addition to the leaves, etc. I've been collecting.<br />
<br />
Limited class size so sign up if you want to join us.<br />
<br />
Enjoy the week......<br />
